UCAS Extra 2027: How to Get a University Place If You Have No Offers

What Is UCAS Extra?

UCAS Extra sits between the main UCAS application cycle and Clearing. It exists for one specific group of students: those who applied to five courses through UCAS and ended up with no offers, either because all five universities rejected them or because they declined every offer they received.

If that describes your situation, Extra gives you the chance to apply to additional courses without waiting for Clearing in the summer. It is free, it is part of your existing UCAS application (no separate fee), and it lets you keep searching for the right course during a period when there is far less competition than the Clearing rush in August.

The important difference from your original UCAS application is that Extra works one choice at a time. You add a single course, wait for a response, and if it does not work out, you add another. There is no limit to how many Extra choices you can make during the window, but you can only have one active at any point.

Who Is Eligible?

You can use UCAS Extra if all three of the following are true:

1. You have used all five of your UCAS choices. If you still have unused choices, you should add a course through the normal route instead.

2. You are not holding any offers. This means either all five universities rejected your application, or you received offers but declined all of them. If you are still waiting for a decision from any university, you are not yet eligible for Extra.

3. You have not accepted a firm or insurance choice. If you are holding an offer as your firm choice, Extra is not available to you (even if your other choices all fell through).

When you become eligible, an “Add Extra Choice” button will appear in your UCAS Hub automatically. You do not need to register separately or contact UCAS to activate it.

How UCAS Extra Works (Step by Step)

Step 1: Search for courses with vacancies. Use the UCAS search tool and filter for courses that are still accepting applications. Not every course will be available through Extra, as popular or highly competitive programmes may already be full. Focus on courses that genuinely interest you and where your predicted or actual grades meet the entry requirements.

Step 2: Contact the university before adding a choice. This is not a formal requirement, but it is strongly recommended. Phoning or emailing the admissions team lets you check whether they are genuinely accepting Extra applicants, ask about specific entry requirements, and express your interest before your application arrives. First impressions matter, and a brief, enthusiastic conversation can work in your favour.

Step 3: Add your Extra choice in UCAS Hub. Click the “Add Extra Choice” button and select the course. Your existing personal statement and reference will be sent automatically. You cannot change your personal statement for Extra, so if your original was tailored to a very different subject, consider whether the course you are adding is a realistic match.

Step 4: Wait for a decision. The university has 21 days to respond. If they make you an offer, it will appear in UCAS Hub. If they decline, or if 21 days pass without a response, you can add another Extra choice.

Step 5: Respond to any offer. If you receive an offer through Extra, you can accept it (it becomes your firm choice) or decline it and continue looking. There is no insurance choice through Extra. If you accept an Extra offer, that is your commitment. You cannot hold it alongside other options.

The main advantage of Extra is time. You have months rather than days to find the right course, and the competition is significantly lower because you are applying before the results-day rush. If you find yourself eligible for Extra, use it. Do not wait for Clearing unless you have a specific reason to.

How to Find Courses With Vacancies

Not every university course will be available through Extra. Popular programmes at highly competitive universities may already be full by late February. But a large number of courses across a wide range of institutions remain open, and the list grows as other applicants decline offers and free up places.

To search for available courses, go to the UCAS search tool and filter by “courses with vacancies.” You can narrow the results by subject, location, and entry requirements. When you find a course that interests you, check the university’s website for specific entry requirements and any additional information about applying through Extra.

Practical tips for finding courses:

Look beyond your original subject if your applications were unsuccessful because of specific grade requirements. A related course with lower entry requirements at a well-regarded university may offer a better outcome than holding out for a highly competitive programme.

Consider universities you might not have originally thought about. A course at a post-1992 university with excellent student satisfaction and strong employment outcomes may serve you better than a more “prestigious” programme that did not work out.

Check whether the university offers foundation year routes through Extra. If your grades are the issue rather than your motivation, a foundation year gives you an additional year to build your academic skills before progressing into the full degree.

Tips for a Stronger Extra Application

Call the university before you click “Add Choice.” A brief phone call to the admissions team shows genuine interest and gives you a chance to ask questions. It also lets you check whether they are actually reviewing Extra applications for that course before you use your one active slot.

Review your original personal statement. You cannot rewrite it for Extra, but you should re-read it to understand what the university will see. If your original statement was heavily tailored to a specific subject and you are now applying for something different, be prepared for the possibility that the mismatch could work against you. In that case, contacting the university in advance and explaining your interest can help offset any disconnect.

Be honest about why your first choices did not work out. If a university asks you about this (some do), a thoughtful, honest answer is far more effective than making excuses. “I applied for highly competitive courses and my grades were not strong enough” is a perfectly reasonable explanation. What matters is what you are doing about it now.

Do not rush. Extra gives you months, not hours. Research each course properly before adding it. One well-chosen Extra application is better than several hasty ones.

What If Extra Does Not Work Out?

If you reach early July without securing a place through Extra, you are automatically entered into Clearing. This is not a failure. An Access to Higher Education course starting in September gives you a fully recognised qualification that most universities accept. The loan for the course is written off entirely once you complete a degree.

A degree apprenticeship lets you earn a salary while studying towards a full degree, with your employer covering the tuition fees.

Taking a gap year and reapplying with a stronger application for the next cycle is a perfectly valid decision, and it gives you time to improve your grades, gain relevant experience, or rethink your subject choice.
