When Is A-Level Results Day 2026?
A-level results day 2026 falls on Thursday 13 August 2026. Results are released from 8am across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. If you are in Scotland, SQA results come out earlier, on Tuesday 4 August 2026.
Most schools and sixth form colleges allow you to collect your results in person from 8am onwards. Some also release them through online portals or by email, but you should confirm the arrangements with your school in advance. If you cannot attend in person, let your school know ahead of time so they can arrange an alternative method.
For anyone with a conditional university offer, results day is also the day UCAS Hub updates to show whether your place has been confirmed. Your actual A-level grades will not appear on UCAS Hub. You will need to collect those separately from your school or college.
Your Results Day Morning Checklist
The morning of 13 August can feel overwhelming. Having a clear plan makes it far more manageable. Before you leave the house, make sure you have the following ready:
1. Check UCAS Hub before anything else. Log in from 8am. If your firm choice shows “Unconditional Firm” or “Conditional Firm Met”, your place is confirmed. If it shows “Unsuccessful” or “Changed Course”, read on for your next steps.
2. Collect your actual grades. Go to your school or college (or check your online portal) to see the specific grades you achieved in each subject.
3. Have these ready: your UCAS Personal ID, your Clearing number (visible in UCAS Hub if eligible), details of your conditional offers, phone numbers for university admissions teams, your personal statement (in case Clearing calls require it), and a pen and paper for notes.
4. Charge your phone fully. If you end up making Clearing calls, you could be on the phone for a significant part of the day.
5. Stay calm and take your time. Whatever your results show, there are always options. Rushing into a decision you are unsure about is worse than taking a few hours to think clearly.
You Got the Grades You Needed
If your UCAS Hub shows your firm choice as confirmed, congratulations. Your university place is secured, and you can start preparing for September. Here is what to do next.
First, check your university’s website or welcome portal. Most universities send a confirmation email within a few days of results day with instructions on accommodation, enrolment, and orientation. Some send these within hours.
Second, make sure your student finance application is in order. If you have already applied, log into your Student Finance England account to confirm your course and university details are correct. If your university or course changed at any point during the UCAS process, update your application immediately. Delays in updating these details are one of the most common reasons students do not receive their first maintenance loan payment on time.
Third, if you have not applied for student finance yet, there is still time. Applications remain open up to nine months after your course starts, although applying late means your first payment is likely to arrive after term begins. Our guide on student finance eligibility for 2026/27 explains exactly who qualifies and how the system works.
You Missed Your Offer Grades
This is the situation students dread most, and it is also the one where knowing your options makes the biggest difference. If your grades are lower than your conditional offer required, here is the honest picture.
Your university may still accept you. This happens more often than most students realise. If you missed by one grade, or if the course is not completely full, many universities will confirm your place anyway. Check UCAS Hub first. If it already shows “Unconditional Firm”, the university has accepted you regardless of the shortfall.
If UCAS Hub shows “Unsuccessful”, do not assume it is final without calling. Phone the university admissions team directly on results morning. Explain your situation, be polite, and ask whether they can reconsider. Admissions staff expect these calls and are often sympathetic, particularly if you missed by a narrow margin.
If your firm choice rejects you, check your insurance choice. Meeting the conditions of your insurance offer should mean your place is confirmed automatically. However, if both your firm and insurance choices fall through, you will be automatically entered into Clearing.
You can also request a priority review of marking if you believe a grade is wrong. Priority reviews are processed within roughly two weeks, and UCAS advises universities to wait until early September for the outcome. Speak to your school’s exams officer on results day itself to start this process.
How Clearing Works on Results Day
Clearing is the UCAS system that matches students who need a university place with courses that still have spaces available. For 2026, Clearing runs from 2 July to 19 October, but the busiest and most important window is results day itself and the 48 hours that follow.
You are eligible for Clearing if you are not holding any offers, if you did not meet the conditions of your firm or insurance offer, if you applied to UCAS after 30 June, or if you declined all your offers.
The process works like this:
Step 1: Search for available courses using the UCAS Clearing search tool. Vacancies are listed from 2 July, but many more appear on results day morning.
Step 2: Phone the university admissions team directly. Do not just add a choice in UCAS Hub without speaking to them first. The phone call is where you discuss your grades, your interest in the course, and whether they can offer you a place.
Step 3: If the university gives you a verbal offer, they will tell you to add the course as your Clearing choice in UCAS Hub. Only add it once you have their confirmation.
Step 4: The university then confirms the offer through UCAS, and your place is secured.
During the phone call, the admissions team may ask you about your motivation for the course. Having your UCAS personal statement nearby can help you articulate why you want to study the subject. Be genuine, be enthusiastic, and remember that Clearing is not a consolation prize. Over 50,000 students find their university places through Clearing every year, including many who go on to attend Russell Group institutions.

You Did Better Than Expected
If your grades are higher than what your firm choice required, well done. You have two options. You can accept your confirmed place and start university as planned, knowing you outperformed expectations. Alternatively, if you genuinely believe a more competitive university or course would be a better fit, you can use Clearing to explore other opportunities.
UCAS removed the formal Adjustment process in 2021, but you can still “self-release” from your confirmed place via UCAS Hub and enter Clearing to approach other universities. This is a significant decision, because once you release yourself, your original place is gone. Only do this if you are confident about wanting to move, and ideally after phoning the alternative university first to check whether they have spaces and would accept your grades.
If you did not apply to university at all this cycle but your results are strong, you can still apply through Clearing for September 2026 entry. You do not need an existing UCAS application to use Clearing.
You Did Not Apply to University This Year
Perhaps you took a gap year, changed your mind, or simply did not apply through UCAS for 2026 entry. Whatever the reason, results day is still relevant to you, because Clearing gives you a route into university this September without having gone through the standard application cycle.
If you have A-level results (from this year or a previous year) and you meet the entry requirements for a course with spaces, you can apply directly through Clearing. You will need to register with UCAS first if you have not already done so.
If your grades are not quite where they need to be, a foundation year could be the right route for you. Foundation years are an additional introductory year built into a degree programme, designed for students who do not meet the standard entry requirements. You still graduate with a full degree, and the foundation year is covered by student finance in the same way as any other year of study. Many London universities, including those near Stratford, offer funded degree programmes with foundation years.
If you do not have traditional qualifications at all, there are still pathways into higher education. Our guide on how to apply to university without qualifications covers access courses, recognition of prior learning, and other routes that universities accept.
Student Finance After Results Day
One of the most common questions after results day is whether it is too late to apply for student finance. The short answer: no. You can apply up to nine months after the start of your academic year. The priority deadline for 2026/27 was 15 May 2026, but late applications are still processed throughout the summer and into the autumn term.
If you go through Clearing and accept a new university place, you will need to update your student finance application (or submit a new one) with your confirmed course and university details. Student Finance England typically takes around four to six weeks to process a clean application, so the sooner you apply, the better your chances of having your first maintenance loan payment ready for late September.
For students starting university in September 2026, the key funding figures for 2026/27 are:
| Loan Type | Maximum Amount (2026/27) |
|---|---|
| Tuition Fee Loan | Up to £9,790 |
| Maintenance Loan (living at home) | Up to £9,118 |
| Maintenance Loan (away from home, outside London) | Up to £10,830 |
| Maintenance Loan (away from home, in London) | Up to £14,135 |
The tuition fee loan is not means-tested, so every eligible student receives the full amount regardless of household income. The maintenance loan depends on your household income, where you live, and where you study. Students from households earning £25,000 or less typically receive the maximum maintenance loan.
If you are a care leaver, an estranged student, or a student with a disability or long-term health condition, you may qualify for additional support including a higher maintenance loan, the Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA), or university-specific bursaries. Many students miss out on this extra funding simply because they do not know it exists.

Alternative Routes If University Is Not Right
University is not the only option after A-levels, and it is perfectly fine to decide it is not the right path for you. Here are some alternatives worth exploring:
Degree apprenticeships combine paid employment with degree-level study. You earn a salary while working towards a full bachelor’s or master’s degree, and your employer covers the tuition fees. Competition for places can be high, but they are available in fields including engineering, digital technology, accounting, and healthcare.
Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) and Higher National Certificates (HNCs) are one-to-two-year vocational qualifications that can lead directly into employment or be topped up to a full degree later. They are offered by many further education colleges and some universities.
Gap years can be valuable if you use the time purposefully. Working, volunteering, or gaining experience in your intended field can strengthen your university application if you decide to apply the following year. If money is a concern, our guide on how to apply to university with no money covers funding options many students overlook.

Frequently Asked Questions
What time do A-level results come out on 13 August 2026?
A-level results are available from 8am on Thursday 13 August 2026. Your school or college may release them in person, by email, or through an online portal. Check with your institution before results day to confirm the exact arrangements.
Can I see my A-level results on UCAS Hub?
No. UCAS Hub shows the status of your university application (confirmed, unsuccessful, or in Clearing), but it does not display your individual A-level grades. You need to collect your grades separately from your school or college.
What happens if I miss my university offer by one grade?
Many universities still confirm places for students who narrowly miss their offer, particularly if the course is not full. Check UCAS Hub first, and if your place has not been confirmed, phone the university admissions team directly on results morning. Making your case politely and showing genuine interest in the course can make a difference.
Can I still apply for university through Clearing if I did not apply through UCAS?
Yes. You do not need an existing UCAS application to use Clearing. If you have exam results and want to start university this September, you can register with UCAS and apply through Clearing for courses with available places. Clearing for 2026 entry runs until 19 October.
Is it too late to apply for student finance after results day?
No. Student Finance England accepts applications up to nine months after the start of your academic year. However, late applications may mean your first maintenance loan payment does not arrive in time for the start of term. Apply as soon as your university place is confirmed to minimise delays.
What is a foundation year, and can I start one through Clearing?
A foundation year is an introductory year built into the start of a degree programme. It is designed for students who do not meet the standard entry requirements for year one. Foundation year places are often available through Clearing, and the year is fully funded through student finance. You graduate with the same degree as any other student on the programme.
What should I do if I no longer want to go to university?
That is a completely valid decision. Alternatives include degree apprenticeships (where you earn a salary while studying towards a degree), HNDs and HNCs, employment, or taking a gap year to gain experience before deciding. You can always apply to university in a future year if you change your mind.
Can I get free help with Clearing and student finance?
Yes. NZ Associates provides completely free guidance on Clearing, student finance, UCAS applications, and university admissions. We are a registered UCAS centre based in Stratford, East London, and we support students across the UK remotely. You can book a free consultation here.
