Universities Near Hackney and What They Offer
One of the best things about living in Hackney is having so many universities close by. Whether you want a Russell Group research university, a creative arts institution, or a flexible programme that fits around work, there is something nearby that suits. Here is a look at your options and what makes each one worth considering.
Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) sits at Mile End, just south of Hackney’s border. It is one of 24 Russell Group universities in the UK, which puts it in the same league as King’s College London and the University of Manchester for research quality. QMUL offers courses across law, medicine (through Barts and The London School of Medicine in Whitechapel), engineering, humanities, and sciences. For Hackney residents, the commute is as short as 10 minutes on the bus or a quick cycle down the canal. QMUL also has its own bursary scheme for students from lower-income households, and its Mile End campus is the largest self-contained university campus in London.
London Metropolitan University has two campuses, one at Aldgate (right on Hackney’s southern edge) and another at Holloway Road. London Met is particularly strong in business, law, health, and the creative arts. It has one of the most generous scholarship programmes among post-1992 universities, including the Rising Star Scholarships worth up to £9,790 per year and a care leavers’ bursary of £1,500 per year. London Met also participates in the Unite Foundation Scholarship, which offers free student accommodation for up to three years to eligible care leavers and estranged students.
City St George’s, University of London
City St George’s, University of London is based around Clerkenwell and Moorgate, a short trip from southern Hackney. It is home to the Bayes Business School (formerly Cass), which is among the top business schools in Europe, as well as strong programmes in health sciences, journalism, and engineering. City St George’s offers a range of means-tested bursaries and has dedicated student money advice services.
University of East London (UEL) is in neighbouring Newham, with campuses in Stratford and Docklands, both reachable from Hackney by Overground. UEL ranked first in England for graduating students’ overall positivity in the 2026 National Student Survey. It offers strong foundation year routes for students who need an alternative entry pathway, and its courses are all covered by standard student finance. Several funded degree programmes near Stratford are available for Hackney residents looking to study locally.
Bath Spa University London (Hackney) operates right in the borough, on Hoxton Street. It offers flexible timetables designed around work and family commitments, with options for full-day or evening study combined with online Saturday sessions. This is a strong option for mature students or anyone who needs to fit study around other responsibilities.
UCL East at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford brings University College London’s world-class reputation into East London. While most UCL East courses are currently postgraduate, its presence in the area signals growing university-level opportunities for East London residents.
Which Universities Give the Best Bursaries?
Bursaries are non-repayable cash payments that sit on top of your student loan. They are free money, and the difference between universities can be significant. Here is how the institutions nearest to Hackney compare:

| London Metropolitan University | Rising Star Scholarships (creative degrees, under-21s) | Up to £9,790/year | Separate application |
| London Metropolitan University | Care Leavers’ Bursary | £1,500/year (£4,500-£6,000 total) | Separate application |
| London Metropolitan University | Unite Foundation Scholarship (free accommodation) | 3 years free housing | Separate application |
| London Metropolitan University | Academic Achievement Scholarships | £1,000-£2,500/year | Alongside UCAS application |
| Queen Mary (QMUL) | Income-based bursary scheme | Varies by household income | Automatic via Student Finance |
| City St George’s | Means-tested bursary | Varies by household income | Automatic via Student Finance |
| University of East London | UEL bursary + Dr Judi Love Award | Varies | Check UEL website |
| London Met (Teacher Training) | DfE Teacher Training Bursary | Up to £31,000 | Via DfE |
Important: bursary amounts and eligibility change each year. Always verify details on your chosen university’s official fees and funding page before making decisions. Our team at NZ Associates checks the latest figures for you when we help you apply, so you never rely on outdated information.

What Student Finance Covers (The Essentials)
If you are new to student finance, here is the short version: university in England requires no upfront payment. Everything is funded through a combination of loans that you only repay once you are earning a decent salary.
The Tuition Fee Loan covers your course fees (up to £9,790 per year for 2026/27). It is paid directly to your university, so you never handle the money yourself.
The Maintenance Loan goes into your bank account to cover rent, food, travel, and other living costs. For Hackney students living at home and studying in London, the maximum is up to £9,118 per year. Move out and study in London, and it rises to up to £14,135.
Repayment only kicks in once you earn above £25,000 per year, and even then it is just 9% of what you earn above that threshold. Earn £27,000 and your monthly repayment would be around £15. After 40 years, any remaining balance is written off completely.
Our step-by-step guide on how to apply for Student Finance England in 2026 walks you through the entire application, and our eligibility guide explains exactly who qualifies.
Extra Funding You Might Not Know About
The tuition fee and maintenance loans get most of the attention, but there are several other pots of money available that many students never claim. Some are means-tested, others are based on your circumstances, and none of them need to be repaid.
Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) covers the extra costs you face because of a disability, long-term health condition, or specific learning difficulty. It is worth up to £27,783 per year, is not means-tested, and does not affect your other student finance. Conditions like dyslexia, ADHD, anxiety, depression, and chronic health conditions all potentially qualify. Our full DSA guide explains who is eligible and how to apply.
Childcare Grant pays up to 85% of your childcare costs if you are a full-time student with children (up to £193.62 per week for one child, or £332.10 for two or more). This does not need to be repaid and sits on top of all your other funding.
Parents’ Learning Allowance provides up to £1,963 per year for course-related costs like books and travel if you have dependent children.
Adult Dependants’ Grant
Adult Dependants’ Grant gives up to £3,438 per year if you have a partner or another adult who depends on you financially.
NHS Learning Support Fund provides £5,000 per year (non-repayable) for students on nursing, midwifery, and allied health courses, with extra payments for parents and specialist subjects. Our guide to health and social care degrees covers the full package.
Care leaver and estranged student support includes enhanced bursaries, higher maintenance loan rates, and year-round accommodation. Our guides for care leavers and estranged students cover everything available.
Charitable grants from organisations like Turn2us offer additional one-off payments to students who meet specific criteria. Our team can help you search for these and identify which ones are worth applying for.
Not sure what funding you qualify for?
NZ Associates reviews your circumstances and identifies every bursary, grant, and allowance available to you. It takes one conversation, and it costs nothing.
Support Services Available to Hackney Students
Hackney has several organisations that support residents with education and finances, but their focus and depth of service varies. Here is an honest comparison so you know where to go for what.
| Service | What They Help With | Student Finance Support? | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hackney Council Adult Learning | Access courses, skills training, signposting | Limited (general signposting only) | Free |
| New City College Hackney Campus | FE courses, 16-18 bursaries, access courses | FE-level only (not HE student finance) | Free |
| Citizens Advice Hackney | Benefits, debt, housing, general finance | General overview only | Free |
| University student services | Money advice, hardship funds (once enrolled) | Yes, but only for enrolled students | Free |
| Private education consultancies | UCAS, student finance, personal statements | Yes (full support) | £500-£2,000+ |
| NZ Associates | UCAS, student finance, personal statements, Clearing, bursary search | Yes (full hands-on support) | Free |
The gap is clear. Before you are enrolled at university, there are very few places in Hackney where you can get dedicated, hands-on help with student finance applications, UCAS submissions, and bursary identification without paying for it. NZ Associates fills that gap completely.
What NZ Associates Does Differently (For Free)
We are a registered UCAS centre based in Stratford, just a short Overground ride from Hackney. Here is what sets us apart from other sources of advice:
We do the work with you, not just point you in a direction. A lot of free services can tell you that student finance exists. We sit with you, help you create your account, fill in the forms correctly, upload your income evidence, and check everything before submission. If something goes wrong or gets delayed, we follow up on your behalf.
We find funding you did not know existed. Beyond the standard loans, we check whether you qualify for university bursaries, DSA, childcare grants, charitable trust awards, and any other support relevant to your situation. Many students come to us expecting just help with their loan application and leave with thousands of pounds of additional non-repayable funding identified.
We help before, during, and after your application. Whether you are starting from scratch, halfway through a confusing application, dealing with Clearing after results day, or trying to figure out a second degree funding situation, we help at every stage.
We do not charge a penny. Many paid consultancies in London charge £500 to over £2,000 for the same services. Our comparison of using an education consultant versus applying yourself explains what you get and why our free service competes with the best paid options.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which university near Hackney offers the biggest bursary?
London Metropolitan University currently offers the largest single scholarship available nearby, with Rising Star Scholarships worth up to £9,790 per year for under-21s from underrepresented backgrounds studying creative degrees. For income-based bursaries, amounts vary by university and household income. NZ Associates can compare the specific figures for your situation across all nearby universities.
Can I study at a university near Hackney while living at home?
Yes, and it is one of the smartest financial decisions you can make. Queen Mary (Mile End), London Met (Aldgate), City St George’s (Clerkenwell), and Bath Spa London (Hoxton Street) are all within easy commuting distance. Living at home and studying locally can save you thousands of pounds per year in accommodation costs while still qualifying for the full maintenance loan for students living at home.
Do I need to pay anything upfront for university?
No. The tuition fee loan covers your course fees and goes directly to the university. The maintenance loan is paid into your bank account for living costs. You do not need any savings or upfront payments to start a degree.
What if my grades are not high enough for direct university entry?
A foundation year is a fully funded introductory year that prepares you for degree-level study. You graduate with the same degree as any other student. Foundation years are available at UEL, London Met, and several other universities near Hackney. If you have no formal qualifications at all, our guide on applying without qualifications covers access courses and other routes.
Is it too late to apply for student finance for September 2026?
No. The priority deadline was 15 May 2026, but applications remain open. Late applications are processed on a rolling basis, though your first payment may arrive after the start of term. Our student finance deadline guide explains what to expect.
Can mature students get student finance?
Yes. There is no upper age limit. If you meet the residency criteria, you can apply for the same tuition fee and maintenance loans as any other student, plus additional grants if you have children or dependants. Our mature student guide covers everything.
Does NZ Associates only help with universities near Hackney?
No. While we are based in East London, we help students apply to any UK university. We also help with student finance for courses anywhere in England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.
